Hot travel destination 2012: Dalarna, Sweden.

Here on the blog we haver already noticed Helsinki making it to the second place in The New York Times’ list of must-go-destinations 2012. Destination number 44 on the very same list is the region Dalarna in Sweden. Dalarna has always been known for its beauty, the blue mountains, the red-painted wooden houses and traditional craftsmanship. The traditional pattern of the Kurbits flower is a symbol of Dalarna, and in recent years the kurbits have emerged very successful in interesting new interpretations and contexts within art and design. One example is the French fashion house Rochas who used local Dalarna artist Slotts Barbros kurbits patterns on skirts, cardigans, scarves in their spring and summer collection 2011.

From The New York Times:

44. Dalarna, Sweden
A storied region offers a getaway from
StockholmMost travelers knowSwedenonly for the urban cool ofStockholmand Gothenburg. But when the sun approaches its summer apex, city dwellers often leave town for one of the country’scentral provinces, Dalarna. Its deep forests and glimmering lakes host traditional midsummer parties, and every brick-red farmhouse deserves its own postcard. With Dalarna’s southern edge only about 125 miles from the capital, getting there — by car, bus or rail — is easy enough, though the rustic landscape of “the Dales,” as Dalarna translates, can feel worlds apart.

That’s made it a natural respite for Swedish painters like Anders Zorn, whose home in the town of Mora is now a museum. Artisans still produce traditional handicrafts like the Dala Horse, a national mascot. But Dalarna is not just for summer journeys: every March, the region hosts the Vasaloppet, one of the world’s biggest cross-country ski races, and autumn brings incredible foliage and rich game dishes at restaurants of surprising sophistication like the Dala-Husby Hotell. by  EVAN RAIL

Check out the Burberry checks Spring Summer 2012 collection

Gloomy, grey January days interesting spring fashion can be a mood booster. For instance, the reinvented and hotter than ever, British iconic label Burberry Spring/Summer collection 2012 is playful and refreshing and breathes “new”, something every spring should be about. The Burberry classics in tactile fabrics are there,  also the collection has a noticeable crafted feel to it.  There is a tribal motif in dresses and skirts.  Batik, block prints, crochet and raffia weaves and heavy linens looks exciting mixed with Burberry´s recognizable beige and black. Some of the fabrics bring Africa into mind, but they are actually designed by Castelford born sculptor Henry Moore and made by Burberry´s local factory in the same town, where Burberry once started in 1856.  When much of the palette for spring fashion  2012 come in pastel, acid and neon, wiz kid Christopher Bailey, Burberrys Chief Creative Officer, take another route and choose peacock, chocolate, ochre, aubergine colors.

Helsinki number two in the New York Times ” The 45 Places to Go in 2012″ list.

Helsinki is placed number two in New York Times “the 45 Places to Go in 2012” list, http://travel.nytimes.com/2012/01/08/travel/45-places-to-go-in-2012.html?pagewanted=all, published earlier this month. Panama, Helsinki and Myanmar are topping the list whereas London made it to number four. Helsinki being the World Design Capital for 2012, the capitals huge Design District, the new Helsinki Music Center are some of the factors behind the top position:

2. Helsinki, Finland
Design. Design. Design. Aesthetics fuel a new cool.
Copenhagen’s culinary awakening and Stockholm’s trend-setting fashion may have ignited the world’s current infatuation with Nordic culture; now Helsinki is poised for the spotlight.
The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design has designated it the World Design Capital for 2012.
Design has long been part of the city’s DNA, but in recent years the scene has been increasingly energized: the official Design District has ballooned to encompass 25 streets and nearly 200 design-minded businesses, which range from shops selling housewares and furniture to boutique hotels and clothing stores. Design has infiltrated the restaurant scene as well, notably the elegant Chez Dominique and the hot newcomer (and Michelin-starred) Olo. On top of all that is the spectacular new $242 million Helsinki Music Center. Student ensembles from the Sibelius Academy — the sole university in Finland devoted exclusively to music — will perform in the striking glass-walled space, and both the Vienna Philharmonic and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestras will give concerts in 2012.

A+D Museum in Los Angeles extend Eames Words exhibition

Architecture and Design Museum in Los Angeles extend the exhibit Eames Words – The Uncommon Beauty of Common Objects to February 20, 2012. The couple Charles and Ray Eames shaped post war era with major contributions to modern architecture and furniture. The painter Ray and the architect that actually never graduated, – Charles Eames, are perhaps most renowned for their iconic chairs, but this exhibit presents the couples lesser-known ideas. The exhibit presents an unlikely combination of objects that reveal the couple´s ideas and inspiration  – from Scandinavian bread to an Indian elephant.

A much loved Christmas Gnome at Skandium

Why is Åsa Götanders irresistible gnome in soft wool with a very hairy beard and a giant woollen cap hiding his eyes?

Can´t he see ? Oh, he can see, Åsa Götander explains on her website http://www.tomtebod.se He is just a bit shy or may not want to see the misery in the world. Åsa Götander made her first “Skäggtomte”, ie bearded gnome in the late 1980´s. In 1993 she built a small workshop next to her house on the Swedish countryside and called it Åsas Tomtebod,  Åsa’s Gnome Workshop. Her charming wool gnomes gained more popularity locally every year until they became a huge gnome hit nationwide  after Åsa presented them at a Stockholm fair 2000. Now she makes over 55.000 a year, each one handicrafted and an individual personality. Åsa Götander tells she got the inspiration from “a walk in the forest or just out of nowhere”. Her original idea was to make a very simple gnome made of wool, with a very unique design and with this simple yet winning concept her Christmas Gnome has found is way to London and Skandium where it has become a beloved classic.
