Objects Geo 1 sculpture

By Fritz Hansen

  • Description

Jaime Hayon is known for bringing playfulness into everything he creates, no matter if it is art, furniture design or decorative objects. The GEO sculptures #1 and #2 are the Spanish designers first wooden sculptures produced by Fritz Hansen. They are an enchanting, tangible interpretation of the quirky drawings Hayon is known for, that are also found in his artistic throws created for the Fritz Hansen Objects collection.
The two sculptures tell each their story. GEO #2 is geometrically a cylinder with a lid that can be lifted and used to store life’s little belongings like jewellery.

Besides a charming visual expression entirely made in thermo-treated ash,
the craftsmanship behind the geometrical sculptures is quite extraordinary.
It takes nothing less than 16 weeks to produce the wooden sculptures and
working towards this unique expression demands meticulous attention and
The thermo treatment is a heat-treating process, which involves heating the
wood to a temperature of 180-215 °C, while at the same time protecting it
with steam. It is a process which is 100% natural, since no harmful chemicals
are added. It increases durability and colours the wood in a golden
dark brown tone all the way through.
The tiny sculptures are glued before milling and the material is untreated.

  • Designer
    Jaime Hayon

Spanish artist-designer was born in Madrid in 1974. As a teenager, he submerged himself in skateboard culture and graffiti art, the foundation of the detailed, bold-yet-whimsical imagery so imminent in his work today. After studying industrial design in Madrid and Paris he joined Fabrica in 1997, the Benetton-funded design and communication academy, working closely with the legendary image-maker and agitator Oliviero Toscani.
In a short time he was promoted from student to head of their Design Department. Eight years later, Jaime broke out on his own, first with his collections of designer toys, ceramics and furniture, later followed by interior design and installations. Jaime Hayon has created the FAVN™ sofa for Fritz Hansen. It is designed with great attention to detail and consist of very few elements. Creating FAVN™ has been an experimental dialogue. Thinking in a holistic approach, discussing who we are and how we live. Back to the human approach, while being innovative and taking risks.
I wanted to create a form that embraces you, something really organic - that's why we named it FAVN. At the same time I wanted to explore a technique - I always focus on techniques. It looks really simple, but it's really complex.
