Today we celebrate the life and work of Jens Risom, who sadly passed away last week aged 100 in Connecticut. Rison was one of the most well-known Danish design heroes of the mid-century furniture movement. Born in Copenhagen in May 1916 to an architect father, his interest in design was set from an early age. Risom trained as a designer at Copenhagen’s prestigious Kunsthåndværkerskolen where he studied under Ole Wanscher and Kaare Klint. His classmates were the other soon-to-be design icons, Hans Wegner and Borge Mogensen.Taken from the New York Times
In 1938, Rison moved to the US and in the early 1940s joined the Hans Knoll Furniture Company as the sole designer of interiors and furniture. Risom designed innovative and truly modern pieces of furniture and introduced contemporary furniture design to the US market who, at that time, were used to a more traditional English aesthetic. His works included the Risom Lounge Chair, Risom Side Chair and Risom Table, timeless pieces which are beautifully constructed and will sit within modern homes for many generations to come.
