Jørgen Kastholm was born in Denmark. He initially trained and worked as an ornamental ironworker. He eventually decided to become an architect and interior designer, and attended the University of Fredensberg in Copenhagen until qualifying in 1958. Some years later he set up a design practice in partnership with Preben Fabricius. During the period, 1960 and onwards, they designed many furniture classics for Danish and German manufacturers, including models for Knoll in the USA. The duo's furniture design is often compared to the design of Poul Kjaerholm, who worked in the same materials. Jorgen Kastholm individually won many international design awards. In 1976 he was appointed Professor of the School of Furniture Design and Product Development at the University of Wuppertal in Dusseldof where he both lived and practiced as a design consultant.
