Teema by Kaj Frank
Christel Vänerberg, Product Development Manager at iittala
Essential simplification. The classic Teema collection from 1952 is based on familiar and basic shapes - a circle, a square and a rectangle. Kaj Frank found them simply irresistible and spent his time reducing all excessive elements, until only the essential remained.
This series is highly versatile; every piece is designed with a practical and functional aspect. Mixing these features and combining them with other dishes offers an endless range of innovative, colourful table settings. Teema is presenting the core of Scandinavian modernism and is a highly appreciated classic, which can be found in a number of Design Museums worldwide.
The Teema vessels have now been updated in size to make them more usable for today's living. Two colours, turquoise and dark brown, are new to the Teema family.
Skandium has the pleasure to introduce Christel Vänerberg, Product Development Manager at iittala, who will present the new Teema range by Kaj Frank and tell us about it's history and why it is worthwhile bringing into the future.
New perspectives on Finnish design
Maria Jauhiainen and Julia Lundsten
At the same time, we have the pleasure to introduce new jewellery by Maria Jauhiainen, who's bowl Lehti is now part of the permanent collection at the V&A, and shoe designer Julia Lundsten with her label Finsk.
The practices of these two London-based young Finnish designers are characterised by a shared interest in experimental and innovative working processes. Traditional materials and tooling is used to find new perspectives and possibilities in their product design. The result shows a smooth fusion of functionality and desirability, minimalism combined with glamour and playfulness. This gives an insight into a new wave of design rooted in Finland but embracing the international creative scene.
