Isaac Chen

Making the ordinary unknown. Isaac Chen's design is an approach based on elemental relationships - gravity, mass and shape. Drawing on the familiar, he transcends the ordinary for our interactions with objects and the space they occupy. In his magazine hanger Riddle for Swedese, Isaac Chen illustrates gravity. Magazines are hung on their own weight via string and stoppers just like inserting bookmarks. Isaac Chen's objects seek to create an awareness of what we already know and to deepen our understanding of it.
Isaac Chen was born in Taiwan in 1983 and grew up in Vancouver, Canada, where he received his Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. After working as a engineer in Taiwan, he continued his studies at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan where he received his Master of Fine Arts in 3D Design - finding his own voice in design.
Isaac Chen has exhibited in Detroit, New York, Tokyo and at the Villa Noailles in Hyeres. Since graduating he has found a home in New York where he continues to develop his studio work through exploration of the primary.
