Michael Geertsen was born in Denmark and trained as a ceramicist in 1988. He graduated as an Industrial Designer at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design in 1993 and added to his
ceramicist skills a profound sense of the Danish design principles of integrity of form and sensitivity of materials. Simultaneously, Geertsen’s design represents an inimitable courage that exists somewhere between art, craft and design. Over the course of 30 years Geertsen has developed his own distinctive vocabulary of forms in his sculptural ceramics – a vocabulary reflected in his design for Lightyears as well. Both as artist and designer Michael Geertsen deconstructs and interprets classic ceramic objects and his fascination for cylindric and conical outlines in his lamp design is both distinctive and mesmerising.Michael Geertsen’s art is represented at the Metropolitan Museum and MAD/Museum of Arts and Design in New York as well as The Victoria and Albert Museum in London among many other places.
