London Design Festival 2012

Brompton store / Republic of Fritz Hansen store
20 September 2012 / 23 September 2012

For 2012 we are putting on not one but two exhibitions at Skandium, both at our Brompton Road store. Opening event Thursday 20th September 6-9pm RSVP to rsvp@skandium.com

Eva Schildt – Credenza Grace
Skandium is constantly extending our body of own production. Our latest edition, a series of credenzas by Swedish designer Eva Schildt, is particularly important to us. Credenzas were part of most interiors during the peak of Modernism. Our contribution is a homage to the Modernist spirit with a contemporary character added. The craftsmanship is impeccable, its style hopefully long lasting.

Eva: "Everything I design has to relate to the human body. It is through our bodies, we perceive the world. I think, this is why I prefer soft lines." Eva's commercial work has covered a wide range of commissions; furniture, textiles, tabletop ware, jewellery, packaging and curating. Apart from working for Swedish companies, she has been collaborating with a number of companies in Japan, which has given her an insight into the demands of different cultures.

Folkform – The Origin of Objects
Most designers turn their nose up at chipboard, synthetic leather and fake marble. But Stockholm-based design duo Folkform, like to challenge our pre-conceptions of what we consider valuable. To coincide with their first major UK exhibition, we have produced a catalogue that tells the story of The Origin of Objects, with an introduction by curator and writer Max Fraser.

“We’re interested in the hierarchies that we bestow on materials” says Anna Holmquist, who co-founded the studio with Chandra Ahlsell in 2005 after meeting at Konstfack College of Art, Craft and Design in Stockholm. To build a product, Anna and Chandra work very closely with manufacturing processes. Mass customisation is a goal being pursued bymany digital designers, but Folkform’s more craft-based approach demonstrates that we don’t need the latest technology to achieve this; in fact it is their primitive approach that gives their work its charm.

LEGO at the Fritz Hansen store
On Sunday 23rd September from 11am to 5pm, LEGO invades the Republic of Fritz Hansen store. Piles of LEGO will be made available for kids (and grown-ups) to create with, and the best design will be awarded. Judging the entries are a representative from LEGO, the editor of Living Etc Suzanne Imre, and the Creative Director of Skandium Chrystina Schmidt. To keep the little ones from starving, we will be serving cinnamon buns from the Nordic Bakery and refreshments.

We are sorry, there are no products in this collection
