Arctander Chair - fabric
Also known as the ‘Mussel Chair,’ this Arctander fabric upholstery Chair by Paustian Furniture is an iconic piece of design that was initially made available to the public in 1944 and only produced in very limited quantities. Having found its way into the homes of a select few in the years following its release, the Arctander Chair went out of production. But in 2016, it resurfaced as part of a collaboration between Arctanfer’s grandson and the founders of Paustian Furniture. The seat’s height at 34 cm makes it not only a marvellously comfortable experience but presents an equally unique aesthetic that lends itself to any setting.
The Arctander Chair is widely seen as a classic piece of modern furniture design and features all the hallmarks of the style. Its soft lines and rounded shapes combine to create one of the genuinely timeless modern pieces that demand attention without being ostentatious or novel. The chair is available in a variety of upholstery options, including Gotland Sheepskin (Grey), Patchwork Sheepskin (Dark Brown), Off-White Sheepskin, Graphite Sheepskin, and Sahara Sheepskin (Pale Brown). Its instantly recognizable legs are made from solid Oak, oiled and lacquered to give them their beautifully rounded sheen.
Part of the internationally acclaimed Paustian Furniture Collection, the Arctander Chair is created as an element of self-expression and has various options from which to choose. Under the curation of Monika Paustian and Sophie Arctander Paustian, the original maker, Mr. Philip Arctander’s values and spirit live on.
The chair’s story began when its Arctander (1916-1994) graduated from the Danish Academy of Fine Arts, as well as the School of Architecture in Copenhagen, one of the most prestigious institutions in the country. He would also go on to become an advisor to the UN. Originally dubbed the ‘Danish Mystery Chair’ due to confusion over who had designed it, the piece popped up in auction houses and was mistakenly credited to another someone named Martin Olssen. It was later established that there was, in fact, nobody by that name and that it was actually referring to a defunct Danish furniture company by the same name.
Irrespective of the chair’s storied past, it has taken its place in the pantheon of iconic modern furniture and has found its way into the homes of art dealers and collectors alike. A Blend of extreme comfort and beautiful design principles, the Arctander Chair has dazzled people for decades, and the allure shows no signs of abating. It is the perfect addition to an already growing collection but could just as quickly sit in someone’s home who simply sees it for what it is. A beautifully designed piece of modern art that adds loads of character to any room.
The chair’s dimensions allude to its soft lines and relatively small size, with the Arctander Chair standing at a height of 77 cm, a width of 65 cm, and a depth of 87 cm. The steel frame is cast with a PUR-foamed shell, which is upholstered with its signature sheepskin finish. Whichever facet of this enigmatic masterpiece catches your eye, know that you will own something that is as unique as it is beautiful.
