60th Anniversary Egg™ Chair

By Fritz Hansen

Regular Price: £11,137.00

  • Description

This 60th anniversary salutes the silhouette of the Egg™, the Swan™ and the Drop™ chairs as well as the design hotel - the SAS Royal Hotel - they were originally created for.

With its soft touch, this aniline pure leather is a visual pleasure telling a story of its original existence. Discover beauty marks such as scars, tiny insect bites and visible necklines - all of which reflects the natural life the leather hides are the remains of. Note that the colour will darken and obtain a more vintage look with time, making every item unique whilst exposed to sunlight and usage. The classic aluminium surface has been plated with gold (23 karat) and the result has an almost satin gloss adding to the exclusive expression of the limited edition design.

The Egg chair comes in a limited number up to 1958 pcs. Each chair will feature a special 60th anniversary leather engraving, with numbering and is available in stores until 31st December 2018.

  • Designer
    Arne Jacobsen

Trained as an architect in Copenhagen, Jacobsen took up the profession already in the 1920s. His most famous buildings include Arhus Town Hall in Denmark, the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen and St Catherine's College in Oxford England. His experiments into plywood resulted in the Ant chair in 1952 and the 3107 in 1955 (also known as the Seven chair), both manufactured by Fritz Hansen.

The work on the SAS Royal Hotel resulted in some of his most outstanding designs, including the Egg and Swan chairs, a stainless steel cutlery set now made by silver manufacturer Georg Jensen and a series of lamps, manufactured by Louis Poulsen. In 1967 he designed a series of stainless steel tableware for Stelton. A perfectionist and a master of detail, Jacobsen worked right up to his death in 1971. In central London, his Royal Danish Embassy on Sloane Street was completed only in 1977.
