Planner Coffee Table - Cream

By Fritz Hansen

  • Description

The Planner™ coffee tables are part of a relaunched collection by legendary American designer Paul McCobb. Paul McCobb was one of the leading figures within the American design movement of the 1950s. He was known for creating slender designs where form follows function and the tables are a brilliant example of this. The table top comes in two kind of marbles, a cream and a charcoal version, suitable for any modern home valuing the simplicity and materials used in contemporary design. The structured yet minimalist marble surface is placed on a powder-coated steel base.

The two new marbles have unique surfaces that tell the story of the stone. Both marbles are honed for a modern appearance and are also slender, in line with the McCobb design philosophy. The marble table tops are a mere 20 mm thick and the slim powder-coated bases in welted steel have a light appearance but are extremely robust. The Cream marble has a closed structure and is visually more uniform than the black one, but it still has a character of its own. While it has a light and delicate appearance, it is personalised by charming natural discolouration of brown-grey shadows which almost resemble a cloud formation.

With the relaunch of the Planner™ coffee tables ‘originality’ is the fundamental keyword. McCobb’s recipe for no-nonsense design, where only the essential is required to obtain both functionality and aesthetics, is a recipe we respect through this relaunch. Details such as the narrowing of the welted steel by the “feet” of the base is how one recognises a genuine McCobb design.

    Paul McCobb
Paul McCobb (1917-1969) was one of the leading contemporary furniture designers on the American design scene in the 1950s and 1960s. Over a timespan of twenty years he designed an impressive range of multi-functional furniture, accessories and textiles, as well as several notable interior design projects. Although he was best known for his furniture designs, McCobb also designed radios and televisions for CBS-Columbia, Hi-Fi Consoles for Bell & Howell, along with other household items. Paul McCobb’s design aesthetic is simplicity of form with a lack of ornamentation. Inspired by his New England upbringing and influenced by Shaker Design, McCobb combined slender lines with sculptural forms. He offered a playful take on traditional forms with hints of Scandinavian craftsmanship and International style clarity, often made with affordable and robust materials such as iron, solid wood and durable upholstery.
