Kast storage system

By Vitra

  • Description

A key theme in the oeuvre of Maarten Van Severen was storage furniture, be it shelves, cupboards or sideboards. The design for Kast, which Van Severen worked on during the last few months of his life, can be considered the quintessence of his exploration of the subject. Kast is a storage unit that is modular in structure, the base version of which is a sideboard. Supplemented by two simple wooden crates and a further basic module, a shelf/wall cupboard combination arises. Van Severen paid special attention to the colour for the sliding doors, which not only emphasise Kast's elegant and yet seemingly classical proportions, but also give it a fresh and optimistic sense.

    Maarten van Severen

Maarten van Severen (1956-2005) was the son of an abstract painter. He chose to study architecture at the Ghent art school and completed three years before going to work for various agencies in interior design and furniture projects. In 1986 he started to make furniture. His work reflected his quest for perfection in form, detail and fabrication. Van Severen was frequently commissioned as a decorator and furniture designer for private residence projects, teamed with Rem Koolhaas. They worked together on the Villa dall'Ava in 1990, then again on Maison à Floirac in Bordeaux in 1996.
