  • Description

The Series 7™ designed by Arne Jacobsen is by far the most sold chair in the history of Fritz Hansen and perhaps also in furniture history. The pressure moulded veneer chair is a further development of the classic Ant™ chair. The four-legged stackable chair can be seen as the culmination of the use of the lamination technique. A technique refined to perfection during the Twenties and Thirties by Søren C. Hansen, the grandson of the founder, Fritz Hansen. The visionary Arne Jacobsen exploited the possibilities of lamination to perfection resulting in the iconic shape of the chair. Series 7 represents the chair in the Fritz Hansen collection with the widest range of applications. It is lightweight and stackable and offers options such as armrests, castors etc.
We offer our stacking chairs in 9 different types of wood each with it´s own unique wood grain pattern, reflecting a comprehensive palette of natural wood tones and hues. What´s more, we also offer the same chairs in a range of painted versions, in truly distinctive colours to compliment your home or office.
Along with the success of the Series 7™ chair, several versions was created. Among others, the model 3117 was introduced. This chair comes with a swivel base and has no armrests.

  • Designer
    Arne Jacobsen

Trained as an architect in Copenhagen, Jacobsen took up the profession already in the 1920s. His most famous buildings include Arhus Town Hall in Denmark, the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen and St Catherine's College in Oxford England. His experiments into plywood resulted in the Ant chair in 1952 and the 3107 in 1955 (also known as the Seven chair), both manufactured by Fritz Hansen.

The work on the SAS Royal Hotel resulted in some of his most outstanding designs, including the Egg and Swan chairs, a stainless steel cutlery set now made by silver manufacturer Georg Jensen and a series of lamps, manufactured by Louis Poulsen. In 1967 he designed a series of stainless steel tableware for Stelton. A perfectionist and a master of detail, Jacobsen worked right up to his death in 1971. In central London, his Royal Danish Embassy on Sloane Street was completed only in 1977.
