Georg Jensen unveils Urkiola collection

Georg Jensen unveils Urkiola collection - Skandium London

Introducing the new collection from Georg Jensen in collaboration with Spanish-designer, Patricia Urquiola.

Patricia Urquiola, the designer: “Two words come to mind when I think of working with Georg Jensen: freedom and challenge. My imagination was generously allowed to run wild, but stainless steel is a new material for me. This created challenges when we moved from concept to production – but challenges are what move design forward, and I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved here. The simplicity of stainless steel feels warm and masculine with its PVD finish, and the stripes – which were not easy to accomplish – give it an unusual elegance.”

Urkiola collection by Patricia Urquiola for Georg Jensen

When asked if Patricia Urquiola would work on her first collaboration with the Danish brand, Georg Jensen –sheimmediately immersed herself in the companies’ archives. Due to this passion for reviving the spirit of Georg Jensen – the Urkiola collection represents a renewed design language for Georg Jensen – forward thinking, but with clear roots in the brand’s history. The Georg Jensen Urkiola Collection is a strikingly modern group of cylindrical shapes in stainless steel, with a subtle Art Deco reference in a beautifully minimalist style, with a nod to the Bernadotte collection, designed by Prince Sigvard Bernadotte of Sweden for Georg Jensen in the early half of the 20th Century. The collection brings  a crisper, stricter and simpler approach to Georg Jensen’s typically more-organic design aesthetic, which can be seen in the Cobra and Alfredo collections.

The collection comprises five pitchers, three bowls, two vases, two candleholders and a tray. The collection is highly textural with a hi-gloss surface in typical Georg Jensen style, the pieces feature mirror-polished stainless steel against ribbed sides, mixing both stainless steel silver and a warming rose-gold PVD finish. The Urkiola collection is set to become a modern classic, adding to the collaborative heritage of Georg Jensen, who’s worked with Aldo Bakker, Zaha Hadid, Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton and Jean Nouvel amongst others.

Materials

What makes the collection so outstanding is that the texture of Urquiola’s designs is very difficult to produce in the metal – that is why texture is rarely seen in stainless steel designs. With great effort and inventiveness, Georg Jensen was finally able to achieve the uncompromising the ‘striped’ ribbing she desired. Additionally, the durable rose-gold PVD finish is new for Georg Jensen Living, meaning that the pieces are exceptionally durable and scratch-resistant; all of these styles are dishwasher-safe. The rose-gold tone was chosen as it brings warmth to the elegant simplicity of stainless steel.
